Aligned with the European strategy for advanced materials and the approach of the Green Deal, i3N’s mission is to overcome the innovation challenges associated with nanotechnologies, nanomaterials, and nanosciences, in order to advance knowledge in materials science and technology and their use as enablers for multisectoral applications. Thus, i3N’s objective is to remain the cornerstone of this interdisciplinary strategy, fully leveraging the outstanding scientific and technical capabilities of the two centers in the design and processing of new materials (from 0D to 3D) and nanostructures for a wide range of applications in an eco-sustainable manner. Thus, the program of activities for 2025–2029 is geared toward the scientific, industrial, and societal challenges that require attracting talent at the forefront of science and technology, capable of stimulating creative imagination, from which new innovations will emerge. i3N will continue to actively promote education and training to meet the needs of industry and society in Portugal and around the world. i3N will foster a scientific culture grounded in ethical values, team spirit, and perseverance as fundamental ingredients for innovative scientific and technological advancements. i3N’s planned activities across the four thematic areas and distributed among the six research groups are:

  • To promote high-quality science and innovation in Advanced Functional Micro/Nanomaterials and Micro/Nanotechnologies, supported by computational modeling, for socioeconomic purposes;
  • Remain at the international forefront of research, promoting innovative concepts and exploring new multifunctionalities in processes and materials to be integrated into eco-sustainable devices and systems, to serve key sectors such as energy, health, ICT, and agri-food;
  • Promote the practical application of R&D&I results through the creation of start-ups and technology transfer;
  • To provide the technical and scientific community with access to the Institute’s facilities;
  • To promote academic excellence through a scientific environment based on teamwork, the passion, talent, and complementary knowledge of its members;
  • To increase public awareness, engagement, and understanding of science, engineering, and technology at the nanoscale, thereby promoting scientific literacy.

In other words, by opening i3N to the public, we believe that the combined strengths of a collaborative team are orders of magnitude greater than the sum of its individual parts.

Therefore, future demands and challenges require us to have highly talented experts who can work with and inspire teams. In doing so, we aim to contribute to sustainable development, a better life, and greater comfort for citizens. We will strive to ensure that our dreams become a success story for future generations.
